Best CBD Oils
What Is CBD Oil?
CBD oil is a substance derived from the cannabis plant. It can come from either marijuana or hemp, both of which fall under the taxonomic classification of Cannabis sativa L. Proponents claim that CBD has an array of therapeutic benefits, including the potential to ease symptoms relating to anxiety, depression, sleep trouble, chronic pain, and even epilepsy. At present, CBD (cannabidiol) is not an FDA approved substance. The sole exception is an epilepsy drug called Epidiolex, which uses CBD as its key active ingredient. The 2018 Farm Bill caused a fair degree of confusion in this regard, as it effectively legalized industrial hemp – which most CBD products today are made from. Depending on the specific strain, industrial hemp can contain significant amounts of cannabinoids, including cannabidiol. This is why the Farm Bill states that hemp is legal as long as it has a THC content of 0.3% or less.
The extremely low level of THC in hemp means those who use CBD oil should not feel an intoxicating high. As you will quickly discover in this guide, however, not every CBD product is created equal. The best brands put time, effort, and money into producing the best products. This is one of the reasons why premium-grade CBD is relatively expensive.
While there are dozens of cannabidiol products to choose from, CBD oil remains among the most popular. Most oils come in a bottle with an integrated dropper cap; users simply place a few drops of oil beneath the tongue, hold for up to 60 seconds, and swallow. Waiting for 60 seconds enables cannabinoids in the oil to enter the body efficiently via sublingual glands and blood vessels. In fact, most agree that CBD taken sublingually (below the tongue) has a higher absorption rate than CBD consumed orally.
What Are the Benefits of CBD Oil?
When discussing CBD oil benefits, one must tread carefully. Remember, most CBD products are not FDA approved. As a result, sellers can’t make any health claims about their products. They especially can’t say that CBD “treats” or “cures” any condition or ailment. Because of this, when brands discuss how cannabidiol works in the body, they must use careful language.
That being said, aside from “curing” or “treating” anything, CBD can offer users tremendous benefit in terms of helping to establish and maintain a healthier lifestyle. Some of these key benefits include:
- Regulating sleep cycles and establishing natural sleep patterns
- Helping manage anxiety and everyday stresses
- Assisting in the management of things like pain, soreness, and joint stiffness
The level of study regarding the way CBD works in the body is increasing significantly. Many studies suggest the compound’s ability to reduce a person’s level of anxiety, for example, or to help them sleep. Other data supports the notion that CBD helps decrease the pain someone feels.
Of course, thanks in large part to the FDA approval of Epidiolex, the most detailed fields of study into the benefits of CBD oil relate to seizures and epilepsy. Many studies suggest that using cannabidiol can reduce the frequency and severity of seizures. A study by Silvestro et al. published in April 2019 in Molecules, for example, suggests that CBD “could represent hope for patients who are resistant to all conventional anti-epileptic drugs.”
There are dozens of other research papers that draw similar conclusions. This study, for example, published in Epilepsy Currents in 2014, provides a wealth of practical information regarding CBD and epilepsy. The trouble is, lack of clinical research in other areas is hindering the cannabinoid’s case for use with other conditions. Without clinical research, the FDA is unlikely to change its stance – and without full legality, it will not be easy for researchers to get the funding they need to investigate the use of cannabidiol for other medical conditions. This is a vicious circle, and is one that needs to end sooner rather than later.
A Tricky Situation
That being said, it is still quite easy in most areas to find CBD – even if some states are more strict than others in terms of what a CBD product is (and isn’t) allowed to contain. The Idaho Office of Drug Policy, for example, states that CBD products must contain zero THC and must come from one of just five outlined parts of the hemp plant.
The good news for residents across the USA is that the federal government is mostly leaving it up to individual states to establish regulations on the use and availability of hemp and CBD. Most states have been fully accepting of hemp’s newfound legality, though a small handful remain stubborn in their policies
How to Choose the Best CBD Oil
If CBD oil is in fact available in your state, the next step is to discover how to find the best quality CBD oil. We recommend taking the following steps in your search:
- Know the hemp source: Ideally, brands will use industrial hemp grown in the United States or one of a select few European Union nations. Hemp from regulated U.S. farmlands maintains high levels of quality. As a result, you know the hemp is free from things like GMOs, fertilizers, and other contaminants such as pesticides and heavy metals.
- Check for third-party lab reports: Lab reports are not cheap, but all reputable brands pay for them. A lab report lets customers know the precise cannabinoid and terpene content of any given CBD product. In most places, the maximum permitted THC content is 0.3%. As we discuss above however, in states like Idaho products are not even allowed to contain trace amounts.
- Look at the extraction method used: CO2 extraction involves the use of carbon dioxide to remove cannabinoids from the hemp plant. The supercritical version of this process is considered the gold standard, and is what many top brands use today in order to manufacture effective, highly-potent CBD products. In general, cannabinoid extraction using CO2 provides the best quality of CBD oil.
- Find the appropriate extract type: Customers these days can buy full-spectrum CBD, which contains nearly a full array of the cannabinoids and terpenes present in hemp. Many brands also offer broad-spectrum options, which is almost the same but contains no THC. Finally, there are CBD isolate products, which include nothing other other than cannabidiol infused in a carrier oil. For those that believe in the entourage effect, full or broad-spectrum CBD oils are probably the way to go. However, CBD isolate oils can be useful for those that want (or need) to avoid consumption of THC.
Other things to consider and evaluate are a brand’s overall customer review scores, their standards of customer service and care, their general reputation (including how long they’ve been in the industry), their dedication to product transparency, and their shipping, refund, and return policies. It’s also important to research and understand a company’s lab reports or Certificates of Analysis; this will allow you to know whether their CBD oils contain other, potentially unwanted ingredients.
Our Guide to the Best CBD Oil Brands
It wasn’t easy narrowing down this year’s list of CBD oil brands. We painstakingly analyzed the various facets highlighted above, however, and the process ultimately worked well as we were able to weed out dozens of companies that didn’t come close to making the grade. (Incidentally, you can read our complete list of CBD oil brand reviews to see if you can find a brand you like that isn’t on this list).
Aside from considering CBD oil reviews from customers, we also looked at the overall quality of each oil, its taste and CBD concentration, and most importantly, the overall value for the money that it offered. Ultimately, we settled on the following picks.
BEST CBD OIL FOR OVERALL QUALITY
PureKana is based in Scottsdale, Arizona, and offers a wide range of innovative products. Aside from selling what in our book is the best quality CBD oil on the market, this brand sells CBD-infused beverages, toothpicks, honey sticks, and much more. PureKana ticks all the boxes, and offers CBD that’s derived from organically grown hemp, and extracted using solventless carbon dioxide methods.
We could wax lyrical about this brand’s product range, but we will stick with PureKana CBD oil, which comes in five flavors: Vanilla, Mint, Citrus, Fruity, and Natural. The potency of these oils come in standard CBD concentrations (300mg, 500mg, and 1000mg), but one thing we love about the PureKana CBD oil range is they offer high-potency options as well, including 2500mg and 5000mg bottles. Very few brands on the market provide such an option. Most concentrations come in 30ml bottles, with the exception of the higher potency options, which come in 60ml.
Unlike other brands on the market, the team at PureKana is all about innovation. This brand is constantly launching new products and improving the quality of their CBD formula. For example, they have just recently launched a new line of health-specific CBD products, including a proprietary 1500mg CBD Sleep Aid tincture and a new Immunity Boost tincture. They’ve also added several new high-potency Pain-Relief gels and roll-ons to their CBD topicals range.
PureKana products are made in the USA, and are extracted from USA-grown hemp — something they take great pride in pointing out. Many industry experts suggest that U.S. hemp is among the world’s finest. The brand also uses CO2 supercritical extraction to obtain its full-spectrum CBD, which is another major plus. (If you want to check out the full list of cannabinoids and terpenes, simply check out the PureKana range of lab reports, which are available on each product page).
All in all, PureKana is a brand that has earned a reputation over several years for selling CBD oil of the best quality. It has featured in a variety of major publications, including Forbes, LAWeekly, and Medical Daily. Many websites that analyze top CBD oils include PureKana in their lists, and we’re no exception. For us, this is the #1 CBD oil on the current market, and the standard that the rest must live up to.
BEST TASTING CBD OIL
Premium Jane CBD oil doesn’t lag far behind when it comes to the quality of their products. Like PureKana, this brand offers a wide range of products, all of which are made from premium American-grown hemp. They also utilize CO2 extraction, and provide detailed lab reports on their entire product range.
Perhaps the one thing that separates PureKana from PremiumJane is the CBD concentrations that are available. While PureKana has its big 2500mg and 5000mg bottles, PremiumJane only goes as far as 1000mg. They do however sell 300mg and 600mg bottles, which are great for beginners or those on a budget. Each option comes in a 30ml bottle, so you get up to 33.33mg of CBD per ml (in the 1000mg version).
For us, what set Premium Jane apart is the fact that they sell the best flavored CBD oil we have ever tasted – and we’re serious when we say that. Their oil tinctures come in Natural, Mint, Citrus, and Mint Chocolate, and you’ll be on to a winner no matter which one you choose. The Mint flavor is exceptionally good, as it’s subtly refreshing and lingers delicately on the tongue. However, you will struggle to find a better experience anywhere than the Mint Chocolate option. In our book, this is the single best tasting CBD oil out there. Place it under the tongue, and savor every drop.
PremiumJane has definitely earned its name as a top-class brand, and opting for any one of their quality products will be well worth it. They offer a range of fantastic products aside from the full-spectrum CBD oil tinctures, including things like CBD Capsules, Gummies, relaxing Bath Bombs, and even Hemp CBD Joints that you can smoke. They’ve also recently revamped their range of CBD topicals, and now offer some of the most expertly-crafted CBD beauty and skincare products on the market.
BEST HIGH-POTENCY CBD OIL
Charlotte’s Web CBD oil gained international recognition after helping a young girl named Charlotte Figi, who had for years suffered from a severe form of chronic epilepsy called Dravet’s syndrome. After taking a high-potency CBD oil developed by the Stanley Brothers of Colorado, the number of seizures that young Charlotte suffered was reduced from hundreds a week, to just a handful per month.
Charlotte’s Web, aka CW Hemp, made it onto our list because we feel they offer the best high potency CBD oil. One of our favorites is the 60mg/ml formula, which is a bit on the pricey side, but worth every penny. The brand does sell lower-concentration oils, which are great for beginners or those looking for a budget option. We also love the fact that Charlotte’s Web offers their oils in Starter Sizes; this essentially allows you to try out various products (without spending a ton of money) in order to see which might work best for you and your needs.
CW Hemp claims it is “The World’s Most Trusted Hemp Extract,” and it’s hard to disagree with this. Like PureKana and PremiumJane, Charlotte’s Web uses supercritical CO2 extraction to remove the cannabinoids from the hemp plant. In addition to their premium hemp extract oils (which come in several different flavors), the brand also offers all the standard CBD options including capsules, topicals, and edible gummies — all of which are extremely pure and of the highest quality.
BEST CUSTOMER-RATED CBD OIL
FAB CBD oil is a brand that stands out for its excellent online customer ratings. The company was formed in 2017 to develop products for the ‘everyday’ person, and they’ve certainly succeeded. They offer a no-frills product line that’s based not on hype, but on sheer quality and value. We love that the products are affordable, and that the website is neat, tidy, and easy to navigate.
The biggest standout to us though, as we said, were the reviews. FAB CBD continuously receives rave reviews, and is among the best-rated CBD oil brands online. They boast hundreds of 5-star reviews from verified customers, and offer a level of customer service that far surpasses most competition in the industry.
Oh, and the oil itself isn’t bad either! Fab CBD comes in four concentrations (ranging from 300mg to 2400mg), and five different flavors (cherry is the tastiest, in our opinion). Their line of CBD oils are sourced from organically-grown hemp extract, and include terpenes – another big advantage in our book (and is likely one of the reasons why the Fab CBD range smells and tastes so good).
FAB has elected to keep the same size bottle for all four concentrations. As a result, you’ll get the most amount of CBD per ml in their largest milligram offering. The brand also sells a few other products, including CBD chews and dog treats. All products are sourced from hemp plants in Colorado, and are very well-priced – at least in our opinion.
BEST AFFORDABLE CBD OIL
JustCBD hails from Florida, and is undeniably a growing influence in the industry. The company began as a small operation in 2017, but has grown steadily in prominence. Now, the brand enjoys widespread recognition for providing high-quality CBD products at very affordable prices.
Also, for a relatively small brand, JustCBD has a generous selection of products to choose from. In addition to selling one of the best inexpensive CBD oil products out there, they offer a superb selection of edibles. Products in the edibles collection include dried fruit and honey sticks.
As for the CBD oil, customers can purchase in one of six concentrations. The largest, 1500mg, currently costs $119.99 – which is an excellent value in our book. You can find cheaper options online, but none that are cheaper while maintaining the same level of quality as JustCBD. They also offer oils as low as $14.99, which makes an ideal entry point for those that are just getting into the world of cannabidiol. If you’re looking for the highest value on a mg-of-CBD-per-dollar basis, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a better option.
Additionally, all of the company’s products come with a Certificate of Analysis, so you don’t need to worry about purchasing low-grade CBD. All in all, this was a pretty easy pick for the best affordable CBD oil around.
